The National Monument (Monumen Nasional in Bahasa Indonesia or is popularly called Monas) is a 132m tower in Central Jakarta, the construction began in 1961 in President Soekarno (the first President of Indonesia) era. The top is shaped like a flame ( which is covered by gold foil), commemorating the struggle for the Independence of Indonesia.
Inside, at the base of building, you will see The Indonesian National History Museum. It has the display of dioramas about the history of Indonesia, with explanations in English and Bahasa Indonesia.
Next, you can go up to goblet (cawan) or reach the top yard by the elevator. Monas is always visited by loads of people, local and foreign tourists, on weekdays and weekends. And since there is only one elevator, you need to be prepared to be in a long queue. In the top yard, you can see the scenery of Jakarta surrounding Monas.
Monas is surrounded by the huge park. You will see a lot of people taking pictures here and there at the park. The Jakartans also doing sports or just relaxing here especially on the weekends.
